Yosemite National Park Pictures Index

Yosemite National Park Pictures Index. Find out the meaning of the word, Yosemite, as explained by historical accounts. The literal translation means “those who kill.” The view from the Yosemite people’s village, Ahwahnee, made them give the valley the name of Awooni or Awwoni which means “large open mouth.”

Should you happen to see black and white photos of Yosemite gracing the walls of businesses and homes, there is a high chance the photograph was taken by Ansel Adams, who grew up in San Francisco, California.

The romantic notions about Yosemite from such photographs suddenly become realistic as you make the treacherous, winding, long drive up the mountains. But once you reach Yosemite Valley and see Bridalveil Falls, it’s worth it.

Because of this drive which may take up half the day, it is recommended that you plan to stay more than a day and take the free shuttle that will drive you to scenic and historic features of the park.
